The first song on the songbook album is taken from my forthcoming jazzy comedy of manners, Alphabet Soup – the first instalment of a cycle of musicals (the Cherrystone Vignettes) set in an aspirational 1950s street called Cherrystone Lane. The plot of Soup is loosely based on Donizetti’s Elixir of Love, the elixir in this case being a dubious ‘self-help’ book intended to improve the readers’ romantic life. This song appears early on in Act One, and in it bike-shop-boy Quentin shares his lovers’ complaint about being tongue-tied around the girl of his dreams, Yvette, who works at the bookshop next door.
