This song is one of the more personal for me, exploring as it does the making of any hard decision; the agony between seeing good and bad in either choice, and the seeing, and accepting, of the not-always-pleasant consequences. It is one of the ‘soul’ moments in Big Mouse Strikes Again, a private eye satire developed by Thrown Together theatre, which I got involved in as the composer and lyricist in the eleventh hour of the shows’ first run. The collaboration was an utter joy, for the Thrown Together boys had written a script so unrelentingly funny I was worried the audience would do harm to themselves.
